South Dakota Softball Makes Historic First NCAA Tournament Appearance
The University of South Dakota softball team has achieved a historic milestone by securing its first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament after winning the 2026 Summit League Championship. In a program history spanning 48 years, the Coyotes had never previously won a conference title or appeared in the national tournament. Entering the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed with a 20-34-1 regular-season record, the team peaked at the right time. Sophomore pitcher Madison Evans was instrumental in their success, earning Tournament MVP honors after pitching 29 innings with a 1.69 ERA and 32 strikeouts. Despite a challenging regular season, the Coyotes rallied to defeat Omaha in the championship series. Head coach Robert Wagner praised the team's strategic timing and resilience. The team now advances to the Lincoln Regional, where they will face host Nebraska, Louisville, and Grand Canyon. The upcoming matches hold special significance as seven players on the South Dakota roster are from Nebraska, and fan support is expected to be strong in Lincoln. This achievement marks a significant turning point for the USD softball program.
