South American Football Chief Proposes 64-Team World Cup for 2030 Centenary
Alejandro Dominguez, president of South American football body Conmebol, has publicly called for the 2030 FIFA World Cup to be expanded to 64 teams to celebrate the tournament's 100th anniversary. The proposal, which has been discussed informally since September 2025, was confirmed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino as a topic for formal examination. The 2030 World Cup will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with centenary matches in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay. Dominguez argued that the expansion to 48 teams for the 2026 tournament was a success and that a larger format would make the centenary a 'different party' and a 'true global celebration.' However, the proposal has drawn criticism, including from Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz, who called the expanded format 'vulgar and ordinary.' FIFA has not yet commented on the feasibility of the 64-team plan.
