Sixteen titles in five years - why Spain are a dominant force
Spain has become the first nation to simultaneously hold both the men's and women's World Cup titles, following the men's 1-0 victory over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final in New Jersey. This achievement caps a period of unprecedented dominance, with Spanish teams winning 16 world and European titles across all age levels (under-17 to senior) in the last five years. The women's team has won 11 titles since 2022, including the 2023 World Cup and two Nations Leagues. The men's team, under coach Luis de la Fuente, has won five titles including Euro 2024, the 2023 Nations League, and Olympic gold in 2024. De la Fuente, appointed in December 2022 after a risky decision by the federation, has implemented a culture of respect and patience. Spain is now unbeaten in 38 consecutive matches, the longest run by any European or South American team in history. The success extends to club football, with Spanish coaches comprising at least a quarter of Premier League managers for the 2026-27 season.
