Sexual Harassment in Berlin Public Transport: Debate Over Women-Only Compartments Intensifies
The number of violent crimes in Berlin's public transport has decreased overall, but sexual offenses have risen to 421 cases in 2025, a 33-case increase from the previous year. 90% of victims are women. Green Party MP Antje Kapek has called for a pilot project introducing FLINTA* (women, lesbians, intersex, non-binary, trans, and asexual) compartments in U-Bahn and S-Bahn trains, citing that daily at least one woman is victimized. The Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) opposes the idea, arguing that new trains are fully accessible and instead advocates for expanded video surveillance. Kapek doubts cameras will prevent assaults. Most incidents occur on the U-Bahn (80 cases) and at U-Bahn stations (101 cases), with peak times between 2-3 PM and 7-9 PM. Deutsche Bahn reports that 91% of its carriages have video surveillance and emergency intercoms are available.
