Search Continues in Maldives After Five Italian Divers Die in Cave Accident

A major search and rescue operation is underway in the Maldives following the deaths of five Italian divers in a scuba accident. The incident occurred on Thursday when the group failed to surface after a morning dive near Alimathaa in the Vaavu Atoll. Authorities reported that the divers were attempting to explore underwater caves at a depth of approximately 50 meters under unfavorable weather conditions, which triggered a yellow weather alert. One body was recovered from nearly 60 meters deep, while the remaining four victims are believed to be trapped inside the same cave system. An Italian expert has joined local police divers and rescue vessels to assist in the high-risk recovery efforts, though rough seas may cause delays. The Italian Foreign Ministry confirmed the deaths and stated that circumstances are under investigation. Italy’s ambassador to Colombo traveled to Malé to coordinate with coast guard officials, while the Italian Embassy provides support to the victims' families.
