SCO Countries to Hold Joint Counterterrorism Drills in Belarus in 2026

Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states have announced plans to conduct joint counterterrorism exercises in Belarus later in 2026. This decision was confirmed by Kyrgyz Security Council Secretary Adilet Orozbekov following the 21st meeting of SCO Security Council Secretaries held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The drills are part of an approved cooperation program aimed at countering extremist ideas through 2030. Additionally, it was revealed that Kazakhstan is scheduled to host a similar command and staff exercise in 2027. Officials emphasized that these activities are designed to enhance cohesion among member states and contribute to regional peace and security. During the meeting, participants also discussed collective security challenges and the current international situation. They reiterated that the SCO is not an alliance targeted against other nations but remains open to broad cooperation based on international law and the UN Charter. The Russian delegation was led by Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu. The discussions underscored the organization's commitment to respecting state sovereignty and territorial integrity while addressing global and regional security issues collaboratively.
