Saxony: Wind Turbine Dismantled After Two and a Half Years Due to Persistent Humming Noise
A 10-million-euro wind turbine in Oberwiera, Saxony, is being dismantled after only two and a half years of operation due to persistent humming noise complaints from residents. The turbine, which began operation at the end of 2023 and was the tallest in Saxony, produced a humming sound compared to aircraft turbine noise. A gearbox replacement failed to resolve the issue. The operator and manufacturer Vestas agreed to dismantle it, with costs undisclosed. The case is considered unique in Germany, as the industry association BWE knows of no other complete dismantling for this reason. Separately, a 20-meter-long rotor blade broke off an offshore wind farm northwest of Borkum in the North Sea, temporarily endangering shipping. The blade was recovered by federal police after the operator's recovery attempt failed. The cause of the blade breakage remains unclear.
