Sarawak Delta Geopark Gallery Opens to Promote UNESCO Heritage Awareness

The Sarawak government has officially launched the Sarawak Delta Geopark Gallery at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex in Kuching. This initiative aims to raise public awareness regarding the state's geological heritage and natural treasures following the area's recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark on April 23. State Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, described the opening as a significant milestone in a development effort that began in 2001. The geopark covers 3,112 square kilometers and involves diverse communities, including Malay, Iban, Bidayuh, and Chinese populations. The gallery features the tagline 'Cradle of Origin' to highlight the region's importance in Sarawak’s geological history and early civilization, showcasing rocks dating back approximately 360 million years. Officials emphasized that understanding these features is crucial for fostering appreciation and respect for the site. The UNESCO designation is viewed as a major achievement that enhances Sarawak's international profile and creates new opportunities for nature heritage-based tourism, making complex scientific concepts accessible to the general public through proper explanation and exposure.
