Resistance Against Rheinmetall Weapons Factory in Berlin Wedding
Various groups are protesting the conversion of a former Pierburg auto parts factory in Berlin's Wedding district into a Rheinmetall ammunition components plant. In mid-July 2026, around 4,000 people, including climate activist Greta Thunberg, demonstrated against the arms production. However, the protest movement has struggled to unite with the plant's approximately 350 employees. The IG Metall union, which represents workers, issued a statement supporting the conversion as job-securing and rejecting employees being made 'pawns' in political disputes. A nationwide protest camp by the Disarm Rheinmetall alliance is planned for September 1-6, 2026, in Cologne, aiming to foster discussions between union members and anti-militarists.
