Repatriation of MV Hondius Passengers Begins in Tenerife Amid Hantavirus Outbreak

The repatriation of approximately 150 passengers from the cruise ship MV Hondius has commenced in Tenerife, following a hantavirus outbreak that resulted in three fatalities. The complex logistical operation involves coordination with over twenty countries. Spanish Health Minister Mónica García confirmed that Spanish nationals were evacuated first via military plane to Madrid, while Dutch passengers, along with some crew and travelers from Germany, Belgium, and Greece, were transported to Eindhoven Airport. Upon arrival in the Netherlands, passengers undergo medical screening and are required to observe a six-week home quarantine, monitored by local health services (GGD). Non-Dutch residents are accommodated in designated quarantine facilities. Although no current passengers exhibit symptoms, strict protocols remain in place, including road closures in Tenerife to maintain order. Additional flights are scheduled for other nationalities, including those from France, Canada, the UK, and Australia, with the final repatriation flight expected on Monday. The Netherlands retains ultimate responsibility for the vessel as it sails under the Dutch flag, potentially accommodating foreign nationals if necessary. Luggage remains on board for later return, while a small crew stays with the ship as it prepares to sail to Rotterdam.
