Ranieri Appointed Italian National Team Technical Director, Vows to Reform Youth Football
Claudio Ranieri was officially introduced as the new Technical Director of the Italian national team at a press conference on July 30. Italian Football Federation President Giovanni Malagò acknowledged the pressure of missing three World Cups and a 20-year drought without a knockout stage win. Ranieri described the appointment as the pinnacle of his career and outlined two missions: to restore love for football in Italy and to ensure children like his 12-year-old niece can see the national team play in the World Cup. He emphasized reducing the high cost for children to play football, shifting focus from early competition to technical development, and increasing playing opportunities for young Italian players in Serie A. Ranieri expressed no regrets about previously turning down the national team job while at Roma, stating he follows his heart. He also noted he will study proposals from Maldini and Leonardo regarding a 10-year youth development plan.
