QDENGA: India's First Approved Dengue Vaccine
India has approved QDENGA, its first dengue vaccine, manufactured by Takeda Biopharmaceuticals. The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) granted market authorization for use in individuals aged 4 to 60, administered in two doses three months apart. The vaccine protects against all four dengue serotypes. Clinical trials involving over 28,000 participants showed 80.2% efficacy against virologically confirmed dengue 12 months after the second dose and 90.4% efficacy against dengue-related hospitalization at 18 months. India accounts for about one-third of the global dengue burden, with over 121,000 cases reported last year. The vaccine represents a significant shift from relying solely on vector-control measures, though experts note varying effectiveness across serotypes.
