Pope Leo XIV Appoints Archbishop Banach as New Apostolic Nuncio to Argentina
Pope Leo XIV has appointed Archbishop Michael Wallace Banach, the current Apostolic Nuncio to Hungary, as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Argentina. The announcement was made by the Hungarian Catholic Bishops’ Conference, marking the end of Banach’s four-year tenure in Budapest, which began in 2022. During his time in Hungary, Archbishop Banach played a pivotal role in coordinating Pope Francis’s significant apostolic visit in 2023 and oversaw the 2025 beatification of Mária Magdolna Bódi. Born in Massachusetts and ordained in 1988, Banach holds a doctorate in canon law and has an extensive diplomatic career with the Holy See. His previous postings include roles in Bolivia, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, and various African nations, as well as representing the Vatican at international organizations in Vienna such as the UN and IAEA. Fluent in multiple languages including English, Italian, French, Polish, and Spanish, Banach will now assume his new diplomatic responsibilities in Argentina, succeeding his role as the Holy See’s chief representative in Hungary.
