Pilot Whales Struggle to Communicate Amid Ship Noise in Strait of Gibraltar
A European team of biologists has published new findings in the Journal of Experimental Biology regarding the impact of underwater noise on pilot whales in the Strait of Gibraltar. This narrow waterway, connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, sees over 60,000 ships annually, generating noise levels between 79 and 144 decibels. The study reveals that while pilot whales attempt to compensate for this acoustic interference by increasing the volume of their short, high-frequency calls, they are unable to amplify their low-frequency communications. These sounds are critical for essential social interactions, such as locating group members after diving for food and finding mates. Consequently, the inability to overcome low-frequency noise poses a significant threat to the already vulnerable whale population.
