Philippine Senator Wanted by ICC Escapes Senate Amid Chaos

Philippine Senator Ronald dela Rosa, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity, has successfully fled from the Philippine Senate. Officials confirmed on Thursday that the senator escaped from the heavily guarded legislative building where he had sought refuge to avoid arrest. The escape occurred following a chaotic incident on Wednesday night, during which security personnel fired volleys of gunshots amid an argument with a government agent. This disturbance reportedly provided the cover necessary for dela Rosa to slip away unnoticed. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. addressed the nation in a late-night television statement, urging the public to remain calm while authorities investigate the breach. Police are currently examining suspicions that the shooting incident was deliberately instigated to facilitate the senator's escape. Senate President Alan Cayetano confirmed that dela Rosa’s wife had messaged him to verify her husband's successful flight. Cayetano stated that there was no obstruction of justice regarding the escape from protective custody, acknowledging that the sergeant at arms confirmed the senator was no longer within the building premises.
