Philippine Senator Ronald 'Bato' dela Rosa, a former police chief wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity, has fled the Senate building in Manila where he had taken refuge. Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano confirmed that dela Rosa was no longer on the premises following a chaotic incident involving gunfire and heavy police presence. The escape occurred amidst tensions after the ICC unsealed an arrest warrant against dela Rosa for his role in former President Rodrigo Duterte’s deadly war on drugs. Duterte is currently in ICC custody in The Hague. Dela Rosa had previously stated he would exhaust legal remedies to avoid transfer, citing concerns over detention conditions. The situation escalated when shots were fired at the Senate, leading to the arrest of one individual and an emergency meeting convened by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. with security chiefs. While dela Rosa’s lawyer initially claimed the senator planned to stay, independent sources confirmed his early morning escape.
