Pedestrian opens latch, detained students escape from police van in Mumbai
On July 22, 2026, during a student protest in Mumbai's Chembur area against NEET exam issues, police detained around 200 individuals from a crowd of 700-800 protesters who had assembled in violation of prohibitory orders. A viral video captured a man casually approaching a police van carrying the detained protesters and opening the latch, enabling several students to jump out and escape. Another video showed a young woman blocking a police vehicle and demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The Mumbai police reported registering 13 cases and booking 400 persons between July 18 and July 22 for unlawful assembly and violation of prohibitory orders related to the ongoing protests.
