Pakistan Forms Task Force to Develop National Waste-to-Energy Policy

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has established a specialized task force to formulate Pakistan’s inaugural national policy on waste-to-energy projects. This strategic initiative aims to create a comprehensive roadmap, institutional framework, and clear strategy to advance waste-to-energy initiatives across the country. A primary objective of the proposed policy is to facilitate and attract both local and foreign investment into the sector by promoting private sector participation. Federal Minister for Power Division Sardar Awais Leghari will serve as the convener of the task force, which includes key officials such as Federal Minister for Climate Change Musadik Malik and Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani. The body also comprises representatives from federal and provincial departments related to climate change, energy, and local government, alongside private sector stakeholders. The task force is mandated to study international best practices, identify legal, regulatory, financial, and operational challenges, and recommend necessary legislative reforms. By improving coordination among stakeholders, the government seeks to accelerate the implementation of waste-to-energy projects, addressing both environmental concerns and energy needs through sustainable solutions.
