One killed in communal clash in Nepal’s India-bordering Sunsari; restrictive orders imposed

A communal clash in Nepal's Sunsari district, bordering India's Bihar, resulted in one death and multiple injuries, including among security personnel. The violence erupted on the night of July 26, 2026, in the Kaptangunj area of Devgunj rural municipality when two religious communities clashed over the use of loudspeakers and display of religious flags. Security forces intervened and opened fire, killing 24-year-old Om Prakash Mehta. Authorities imposed indefinite prohibitory orders from July 27 covering five market areas, banning gatherings of more than four people, demonstrations, and public meetings. Violators face fines or imprisonment. Sunsari is a key transit corridor between Nepal and India.
