NYPD Graduates New K-9 Unit Honoring Fallen Officers

The New York Police Department (NYPD) recently graduated nearly two dozen new K-9 officers and their handlers from an intensive four-month training program. The ceremony, held at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, marked the entry of 21 new canine recruits into the department's elite Emergency Service Unit (ESU). These dogs are trained for various critical tasks, including criminal apprehension, bomb detection, cadaver recovery, and locating missing persons or individuals trapped in collapsed structures. A significant aspect of this graduating class is the tradition of naming the dogs after fallen NYPD officers. Notable graduates include Vin, a bloodhound named after Vincent Danz, who died during the 9/11 attacks, and McDonald, a Dutch Shepherd named after Detective Steve McDonald, who was paralyzed in the line of duty in 1986. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch emphasized the deep personal trust and discipline required between handlers and their canine partners, highlighting the respected tradition these new teams are joining to help combat crime and ensure public safety across New York City.
