Norway Mourns Olympic Rowing Champion Olaf Tufte, Found Dead at Age 50
Norwegian sports hero and two-time Olympic single sculls champion Olaf Tufte has died at age 50. He was found unconscious on his farm and despite rescue attempts, died at the National Hospital in Oslo. The cause of death is currently unknown, with no witnesses or suspicion of a work accident. Tufte won gold at the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympics, and was world champion in 2001 and 2003. He continued competing into his 40s, winning bronze in Rio 2016 and competing in Tokyo 2021 at age 45. Just days before his death, he was training young rowers. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre called him 'one of Norway's greatest sports heroes.' He leaves behind a wife and two children.
