Norovirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship in France: Over 80 Passengers Isolated

A norovirus outbreak aboard the British cruise ship Ambition in Bordeaux, France, has resulted in the isolation of more than 80 symptomatic passengers in their cabins. The health crisis emerged following the death of a 92-year-old British passenger, prompting French authorities to initially confine all 1,700 people on board. After laboratory tests at Bordeaux University Hospital confirmed the presence of norovirus, officials authorized the disembarkation of asymptomatic passengers and crew, while those exhibiting symptoms remain isolated. Local authorities clarified that this incident is unrelated to a separate hantavirus outbreak on a Dutch cruise ship. The Ambition, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, was midway through a 14-night voyage from the UK when the outbreak occurred. Despite the disruption, the ship is scheduled to continue its itinerary, departing Bordeaux as planned. Norovirus, a highly contagious stomach virus causing vomiting and diarrhea, is a common cause of gastrointestinal outbreaks in closed environments like cruise ships. The CDC noted that such incidents are frequent, with 23 recorded on cruise ships last year. No other serious cases have been reported, and affected individuals are receiving medical care on board.
