NIST Targets Summer Release for AI Cybersecurity Guidelines
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) plans to release draft cybersecurity guidance for artificial intelligence systems this summer. Victoria Pillitteri, manager of NIST’s Security Engineering and Risk Management Group, announced that a cybersecurity framework profile for AI will debut pending agency approval. This initiative aims to mitigate AI-enabled digital threats while supporting safe AI adoption. The guidance includes control overlays tailored to specific AI types, such as predictive, agentic, and generative systems. Drafts for predictive AI are expected this summer, with agentic system guidance following in late summer or early fall. Finalization is targeted for 2027. NIST emphasizes speed and iterative updates to keep pace with rapid technological advancements. Concurrently, the Department of Commerce’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) is evaluating frontier AI models from major developers like Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and xAI for national security implications. Although a press release regarding these partnerships was temporarily removed due to White House sensitivities, CAISI remains central to assessing model risks. The guidelines aim to augment existing security infrastructures rather than replace them, helping vendors and supply chain partners adapt their architectures and workforce to future needs.
