NHAI removes 361 encroachments from national highways after Supreme Court order
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has removed 361 illegal access points and encroachments from national highways across India, following a Supreme Court order issued in April 2025 aimed at improving road safety. The nationwide drive covered 693 km of highways and resulted in 1,403 notices being served against unauthorised structures, commercial access points, and median cuts. Additionally, 150 unauthorised median gaps were permanently closed. The Supreme Court had ordered an immediate ban on new dhabas and commercial establishments within highway rights-of-way and mandated removal of existing unauthorised structures within 60 days. The NHAI conducted the enforcement in coordination with local district magistrates and police to ensure effective implementation.
