NGCP Issues Red and Yellow Alerts for Luzon and Visayas Grids Due to Power Shortage
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has placed the Luzon and Visayas power grids under red and yellow alerts due to insufficient supply caused by derated power plants and forced outages. In Luzon, a red alert is in effect from 4 pm to 10 pm, while Visayas faces a red alert from 4 pm to 9 pm on May 14, 2026. Approximately 4,200 megawatts are unavailable in Luzon, creating a deficit against peak demand. Energy Secretary Sharon Garin urged consumers to reduce usage during peak hours, specifically limiting air conditioning. Meanwhile, Manila Electric Company (Meralco) activated its Interruptible Load Program and implemented manual load dropping, resulting in rotational power interruptions for approximately 1.9 million customers across Metro Manila and surrounding provinces. Services were restored by early morning. The alerts indicate that current power supplies cannot meet consumer demand and grid contingency requirements, prompting coordinated efforts between the Department of Energy and industry stakeholders to mitigate impacts on consumers.
