New York to Ban Cars at Grand Army Plaza for Pedestrian Safety

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn have announced a major redesign of Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn. The initiative aims to ban vehicular traffic in the central area to create a safer, pedestrian-friendly public space connecting the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch with Prospect Park. This project builds on previous efforts, such as making Prospect Park permanently car-free in 2018. The redesign involves diverting traffic to the north side of the roundabout, raising pedestrian sectors to sidewalk level, and incorporating new urban materials, lighting, and green areas. Officials state that the changes will improve safety and enhance public transportation efficiency, specifically benefiting the B41 and B6 bus lines which serve thousands of daily passengers. The Department of Transportation is currently conducting studies and gathering community feedback through surveys and workshops. The project will undergo review by Community Boards and city commissions in the coming months before final implementation plans are established. This move reflects a broader urban planning strategy to prioritize pedestrian safety and tranquility in one of New York's most recognized neighborhoods.
