Researchers analyzed gas samples from geothermal springs and found unusual helium isotope signatures indicating a direct connection between surface fractures and the Earth’s mantle. This fluid connection suggests the Southwest African Rift Zone is active, similar to the well-known East African Rift System. While continental break-up occurs over millions of years, the findings have immediate implications for identifying valuable geothermal energy resources and commercially important gases like helium and hydrogen. The region may possess structural advantages for future tectonic boundary formation due to existing crustal weaknesses. Although this represents an early investigation, extensive surveys are currently underway to further understand the massive geological system.
