New Studies Test Orforglipron and Bacterial Prep for Weight Loss Maintenance
Two recent studies published in Nature Medicine explore remedies to prevent the yo-yo effect after weight loss. The first study examined orforglipron, a daily tablet acting similarly to weight-loss injections. Participants who switched to orforglipron after initial weight loss retained 75 to 80 percent of their weight loss after one year, significantly outperforming the placebo group, which retained only 38 to 49 percent. While effective, the drug caused gastrointestinal side effects, and its long-term efficacy beyond one year remains uncertain. The second study investigated Akkermansia muciniphila, a bacterial preparation. Adults who lost weight through diet changes then took this probiotic for 24 weeks retained an average of 85 percent of their weight loss. However, experts caution against hasty recommendations due to the small study size and short observation period. Orforglipron offers potential advantages over injections, including easier storage and lower production costs, potentially making it a more accessible maintenance option. These findings highlight promising pharmaceutical and biological approaches to sustaining weight loss, addressing a common challenge in obesity treatment.
