New Sternbrücke Mega Railway Bridge Begins Move to Final Location in Hamburg
The new Sternbrücke, a 3,700-ton steel tied-arch bridge measuring 108 meters long and 21 meters wide, has begun its journey to its final position in Hamburg-Altona. On Wednesday, the structure was successfully pushed sideways 50 meters from its assembly site onto Max-Brauer-Allee using 48 Self-Propelled Modular Transporters with 1,088 wheels. The bridge will be raised to six meters height and then moved several hundred meters to its destination on Thursday. Project manager Janna Widmaier of Deutsche Bahn expressed satisfaction with the operation, which was executed by Dutch company Mammoet. The new bridge replaces a 100-year-old structure on the Verbindungsbahn, a critical rail corridor used by approximately 900 trains daily. The old bridge's steel from 1926 had become fatigued and unweldable. The project faced criticism for displacing music clubs that were housed under the old structure.
