Navy Seeks Private Sector Solutions for Temporary Housing During Barracks Renovations
The U.S. Navy has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to industry partners seeking solutions for temporary housing, or 'swing space,' to accommodate thousands of sailors displaced during barracks modernization projects. The service faces a shortage of several thousand beds and is exploring options including prefabricated units, containerized units, RVs, leased apartments, hotels, and houseboats. This initiative aligns with broader Department of Defense efforts to improve living conditions, including the creation of a Barracks Task Force in October 2025. The Navy announced $375 million in barracks improvements in December 2025, and Naval Support Activity Bahrain began a $15.8 million renovation in January 2026. The Pentagon has proposed a $26.8 billion military construction budget for fiscal 2027, with $21.5 billion earmarked for barracks across all services. Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao recently toured barracks at Marine Corps Base Hawaii to review modernization efforts.
