Multitalented Artist Thomas van Dun Premieres New Composition in Rotterdam
Thomas van Dun, a 30-year-old Dutch multidisciplinary artist, has gained recognition for his excellence in both music and visual arts. In 2024, he won two prizes for young composers and triumphed in the TV competition *Project Rembrandt* with his painting *Sanctuarium*. His latest orchestral composition, *L'appel du vide* (The call of the void), was recently premiered by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra at De Doelen, marking the concert hall's 60th anniversary. Van Dun, who describes himself as an outsider during his youth, turned to drawing and music as forms of communication after facing bullying. His life took a dramatic turn at age 20 when he was diagnosed with HIV following a health crisis in Rome. Supported by his partner and mentor Manoj Kamps, Van Dun pursued formal composition studies at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague under Martijn Padding. His new piece reflects themes of destruction and rebuilding, linking the historical bombing of Rotterdam to personal struggles with depression and suicide, serving as a prelude to Bruckner’s Fifth Symphony.
