Montek Singh Ahluwalia to Head Tamil Nadu Revenue Augmentation Committee
The Tamil Nadu government has constituted a Revenue Augmentation Committee chaired by economist Montek Singh Ahluwalia, former Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission. The committee is tasked with recommending measures to sustainably increase the state's tax and non-tax revenues by improving compliance, plugging leakages, rationalizing tax rates and exemptions, and identifying new or underutilized revenue sources. Other members include K.P. Krishnan, Arbind Modi, Najib Shah, M.A. Siddique, and M. Suresh Babu. The committee will function for three months and is empowered to access records from any government department. It will also examine non-tax avenues such as dividends from public sector undertakings, land and asset monetization, and enhanced revenue from alcohol regulation. The initiative aims to strengthen fiscal self-reliance and create fiscal space for developmental commitments.
