Minister Bartlett Champions Caribbean Tourism Logistics Hub to Boost Revenue Retention
The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) held a significant meeting of its new Tourism Supply-Side Committee in Antigua, led by Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett. The committee aims to address the region's low retention of tourism revenue, currently under 20 percent due to heavy reliance on imports. Bartlett advocated for establishing a Caribbean tourism logistics hub to strengthen local supply chains, enhance intra-regional trade, and create jobs in agriculture and manufacturing. This initiative seeks to transform tourism from an extractive industry into one that retains wealth within Caribbean communities. Supporting this effort, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has committed funding for a consultant to study supply-side strategies, with contracts expected by June 2026. Additionally, the World Bank pledged support for analyzing sector resilience. These developments mark a coordinated regional shift toward capturing greater economic benefits from tourism, which contributes significantly to Caribbean GDPs.
