Mexico Announces Debt Forgiveness for Tens of Thousands of Small Farmers

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced a comprehensive government program to forgive or significantly reduce debts owed by tens of thousands of small-scale farmers, producers, and fishermen. The initiative targets loans from the National Fund for Agricultural, Rural, Forestry, and Fisheries Development (FND) that had become unpayable, often due to exploitation by third parties and predatory legal practices. The program aims to settle or restructure debts for 99.5% of FND debtors, effectively dismantling corruption networks where lawyers extorted struggling farmers. Specific provisions include full debt forgiveness for approximately 11,761 women producers with debts under 397,551 pesos and male producers owing less than 247,966 pesos. Women with larger debts will receive a 30% discount and restructuring options. In total, nearly 30,000 male producers and over 13,000 female producers are expected to benefit. This measure seeks to provide immediate financial relief to vulnerable agricultural workers who were manipulated into taking loans they could not repay, thereby alleviating severe economic distress and stopping abusive legal extortion tactics prevalent in the sector.
