Meta Launches Instants, a Single-View Photo App Targeting Snapchat

Meta has officially launched Instants, a new feature integrated into Instagram and available as a standalone iPhone application, designed to compete directly with Snapchat. The tool focuses on spontaneous, unedited photo sharing where images disappear immediately after being viewed by the recipient. Unlike the curated nature of modern Instagram, Instants bypasses filters, galleries, and public feeds, sending content exclusively to close friends or mutual followers with reactions kept in private chats. Photos are archived for up to one year for potential reuse in Stories. This launch represents Meta's third attempt at capturing the authentic sharing market, following previous tests like Candid Stories and Peek. The timing coincides with Snapchat's recent struggles, including significant layoffs, providing Meta an opportunity to reclaim users seeking organic interaction away from algorithm-driven feeds. While the Instagram integration is global, the standalone app is currently limited to selected countries.
