Meta Launches 'Instants' App and Feature for Ephemeral Photo Sharing on Instagram

Meta has officially launched Instants, a new ephemeral photo-sharing feature integrated into Instagram, alongside a standalone companion app designed for quicker camera access. Instants allows users to share casual, unedited photos that disappear after being viewed by friends or after 24 hours. Unlike Instagram Stories, Instants do not support filters, stickers, or edits, emphasizing raw, everyday moments. Responses to these images are directed to Direct Messages rather than public posts, enhancing privacy. Additionally, Instants cannot be screenshotted or screen-recorded. While the feature is available globally on Instagram, the standalone Instants app is currently limited to select countries as an experimental product directly competing with Snapchat. Images shared via either platform are synchronized, appearing in both the Instagram inbox and the Instants app. This launch represents Meta's continued effort to capture the market for private, transient social interactions, leveraging its existing user base while testing new dedicated applications for specific engagement styles.
