Maharashtra police flags cross-border disinformation campaign on NEET protests
The Maharashtra State Cyber Department announced on July 28, 2026, that it had uncovered a coordinated cross-border disinformation campaign linked to protests by the 'Cockroach Janata Party' (likely a reference to NEET-related protests). Technical analysis revealed that anti-social elements operating from Pakistan and certain Middle Eastern countries were amplifying misleading narratives targeting Indian audiences. The police identified nearly 500 social media profiles, with approximately 100 accounts operating from outside India. Over 140 posts involved AI-generated or AI-assisted content, including digitally inflated crowd visuals, synthetic voice generation, cloned audio, and manipulated videos falsely attributed to public figures. The monitoring used OSINT, metadata examination, behavioral analysis, and forensic tools. Legal action has been initiated, and objectionable content has been removed from platforms including Instagram, X, Facebook, and YouTube.
