The project includes $6.8 million initially paid to Atlantic Industrial Coatings for repainting, with an additional $6.2 million added recently, and $1.74 million paid to an Ohio firm for filtration upgrades. Trump previously claimed the project could be completed for far less money and in a shorter timeframe, comparing it to private swimming pool construction. He has defended the expenditures against media criticism, arguing that previous administrations also spent millions on site improvements.
