Kwara State Expands World Bank-Backed Loan Scheme to 1,400 Beneficiaries
The Kwara State Government in Nigeria has announced an expansion of its Community Revolving Fund, part of the World Bank-supported Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project. The initiative aims to increase the number of beneficiaries from 1,000 to approximately 1,400 across rural communities to boost agricultural growth and improve livelihoods. Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by Environment Commissioner Nafisat Musa-Buge, highlighted the scheme as a key strategy for economic empowerment and environmental resilience. Under the program, each participating community receives $25,000, which is distributed among five Community Interest Groups. The funds are structured as repayable loans with an eight-month repayment window, ensuring the money is recycled to support other community members. A recent two-day revalidation and retraining program in Ilorin was organized to equip beneficiaries with practical skills and reduce post-disbursement challenges. Officials emphasized that the revolving nature of the fund guarantees sustainability and widens access to economic opportunities for rural dwellers, with visible impacts already recorded in environmental improvement and local economic activities.
