King Charles Unveils New Stage Curtains at Royal Opera House Gala
King Charles III attended a grand gala at the Royal Opera House in London to unveil new main stage curtains, expressing delight at the occasion. The event, titled 'Spring Gala: Stories From The Royal Ballet And The Royal Opera,' featured over 2,000 guests and an introduction by Sir Ian McKellen. The new mohair velour curtains, measuring 9.75 meters wide with a 10.8-meter drop, replace the previous set installed in 1997 after more than 10,000 performances. Designed in honor of the King, the curtains feature an embroidery of his personal cipher, combining 'C', 'R' for Rex, and 'III', symbolizing the enduring relationship between the monarchy and the arts. The project was supported by a grant from the Julia Rausing Trust. Before the unveiling, the King met with craftsmen from Gerriets and the Royal School of Needlework, viewing original designs and embroidery samples. Alex Beard, chief executive of the Royal Ballet and Opera, highlighted the significance of the investment in stage craft and the future of the organization. The evening celebrated the shared artistic heritage of both companies under the patronage of King Charles.
