Kerala unveils action plan to end snakebite deaths by 2030
Kerala has launched a State Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Snakebite Envenoming (SAPSE) aiming for zero snakebite deaths and disabilities by 2030, aligning with WHO and national targets. The plan, built on the 'One Health' platform, focuses on strengthened primary care, improved emergency facilities, enhanced surveillance, community awareness, and intersectoral coordination. Key measures include declaring snakebite a notifiable disease, establishing a tiered referral system (L1 basic stabilization within 30 minutes, L2 with ICU, L3 tertiary care), setting up a 24-hour helpline, expanding ambulance coverage, improving anti-snake venom supply chains, and training healthcare personnel. Data-driven surveillance will integrate health and forest department data to generate risk maps. A separate Tribal Sub-Action Plan addresses vulnerable forest-fringe communities. The plan involves multiple departments including Health, Forest, Agriculture, and Education.
