Karnataka Upalokayukta Orders Crackdown on Unauthorised Homestays in Hampi
Karnataka Upalokayukta B. Veerappa conducted a surprise inspection of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi on July 25, 2026, and directed officials to take stringent action against over 200 unauthorised homestays operating without required permissions. He expressed concern over illegal electricity connections provided to these establishments on agricultural or residential land. The Upalokayukta ordered joint inspections by panchayat and taluk authorities, legal action including removal of illegal homestays, and suo motu proceedings against officials who allowed them. He also found commercial activities and habitation within the 100-metre prohibited zone around the protected monument on Janata Street and instructed officials to identify an alternative site for traders. Additionally, he visited Virupaksha Temple and was informed that ASI permission had been obtained to install air-conditioning in the sanctum.
