Joe Manchin launches Independent Leadership Council to elect independent candidates to Congress
Former Senator Joe Manchin (I-W.Va.) is returning to political activism by launching the Independent Leadership Council (ILC), a new organization dedicated to recruiting and electing independent candidates to the U.S. Congress. Manchin, 78, who left the Senate in January 2025 after serving as a Democrat-turned-independent, will lead the group. The ILC aims to build support and infrastructure for candidates running outside the Democratic and Republican parties in congressional races. The initiative reflects growing dissatisfaction with the two-party system and Manchin's continued influence in centrist politics. The announcement was first reported by The Hill.
