Islamic State Claims Deadly Attack on Syrian Government Forces in Eastern Syria

The Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for a deadly ambush in eastern Syria that resulted in the deaths of two Syrian army soldiers and injuries to others. This incident, which occurred in the Hasakah countryside, marks the jihadist group's first lethal operation against the Syrian government since February. The attack involved an assault on a bus carrying military personnel. While the Syrian state news agency SANA confirmed the casualties, IS stated via its Amaq News Agency that its fighters killed and wounded six members of the Syrian army. This event underscores the persistent security threat posed by IS remnants as President Ahmed al-Sharaa attempts to consolidate authority nearly eighteen months after ousting former leader Bashar al-Assad. Sharaa, formerly associated with the Nusra Front, has since severed ties with Al Qaeda and joined the U.S.-led coalition against IS. The attack follows a declared new phase of operations by IS against Sharaa’s government, highlighting ongoing instability despite the territorial defeat of the group a decade ago.
