Instagram Launches Instants: A Snapchat-Like Feature for Unedited, View-Once Photos

Instagram has officially launched Instants, a new feature and dedicated app designed to facilitate the sharing of authentic, unedited photos that disappear after being viewed. Unlike traditional posts, Instants requires users to capture images directly through the in-app camera, prohibiting uploads from the camera roll or the use of filters. These photos are shared exclusively with Close Friends or mutual followers and vanish after 24 hours, with screenshot functionality disabled to enhance privacy. Users can react to and reply to these ephemeral images, which are stacked within Instagram's direct messaging interface. While the feature is rolling out globally on the main Instagram app, the standalone Instants app is currently limited to select countries, following initial tests in Italy and Spain. Meta has also implemented specific safeguards for Teen Accounts, including daily time limits that include Instants usage, parental notifications upon app download, and muted notifications during night hours. This launch represents Meta's strategic move to compete more directly with Snapchat by emphasizing raw, in-the-moment sharing over curated content, aiming to foster more genuine interactions among younger demographics and close social circles.
