Instagram Launches Instants, a New App for Disappearing Candid Photos

Instagram has officially debuted Instants, a new feature and standalone dedicated application designed for sharing spontaneous, disappearing photos. Available within the main Instagram app and as a separate download on iOS and Android, Instants aims to recapture the candid nature of early social media by allowing users to snap and share images that vanish after being viewed by friends. Unlike standard posts, Instants lack editing tools or filters, permitting only caption additions, and cannot be uploaded from the camera roll. Users can share these moments with close friends or mutuals, with an option to undo sends before viewing. The feature integrates Instagram's existing safety protocols, including parental supervision for teen accounts, screenshot blocking, and restricted access hours. This launch represents Instagram's latest attempt to compete with ephemeral messaging platforms like Snapchat and BeReal, following previous experiments such as Bolt and Candid Stories. The dedicated app addresses user feedback requesting quicker camera access, implicitly acknowledging the bloated nature of the primary Instagram interface. Archived Instants remain accessible for up to a year for potential story compilation.
