Instagram Launches Global 'Instants' App for Ephemeral Photo Sharing

Instagram has officially launched its new feature, Instants, globally following successful testing in select markets. This new functionality is designed to facilitate casual, real-time social interactions by allowing users to share photos that disappear after being viewed and are inaccessible after 24 hours. Accessible via the main Instagram app or a dedicated Instants app, the feature restricts users to taking real-time photos without gallery uploads or editing capabilities, aiming for authenticity. Shared content appears in inboxes, where recipients can react but cannot screenshot or screen record. Key features include an Undo option to unsend messages before they are opened and a Snooze mode for notifications. While inspired by competitors like Snapchat and BeReal, Instagram differentiates Instants by storing shared photos in a private archive for up to one year for potential Story recaps. The launch also integrates existing teen safety systems, such as Family Centre controls and Sleep Mode restrictions.
