Instagram has officially launched 'Instants,' a new feature designed to facilitate authentic and ephemeral photo sharing among close friends and mutual followers. Drawing inspiration from platforms like Snapchat and BeReal, Instants allows users to capture unedited photos directly through the in-app camera, which cannot be uploaded from the gallery or further modified. These images are viewable only once and remain accessible for 24 hours before disappearing, although they are stored in a private archive for up to one year. The feature aims to counter the trend of curated content on Instagram by encouraging casual, real-life interactions. Users can react with emojis or reply with their own Instants, while screenshotting and recording are disabled to ensure privacy. Meta is also testing Instants as a standalone application in select regions, including Spain and Italy.
