Indian Parliamentary Panel Summons Digital Platforms Over Privacy and Public Order
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, chaired by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, has summoned representatives from Meta, X (formerly Twitter), Google, and Snapchat for a meeting on August 3, 2026. The meeting follows nationwide protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) that forced Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign over the NEET-UG paper leak. The agenda includes briefing by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Ministry of Home Affairs, and the digital platforms on the regulation of social and digital media. Dubey posted on X that the committee will question how these companies protect the privacy of women, children, farmers, and rural folks, and how they ensure the government's public order. The CJP had used Instagram to mobilize crowds during the 36-day protest.
