India criticizes lack of UN Security Council reform progress, calls for text-based negotiations

India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, strongly criticized the lack of progress in UN Security Council (UNSC) reform negotiations during the 80th session of the Inter-Governmental Negotiations (IGN). The UN General Assembly rolled over the IGN to its 81st session, marking the 18th year of talks without concrete results. Harish invoked Indian philosophy to express frustration, stating the IGN has gone through 17 cycles with 'no liberation in sight.' He warned that the reform process cannot be held hostage by the 'narrow, divisive interests of a select few Member States.' India called for text-based negotiations with defined timelines and milestones, and insisted on expansion in both permanent and non-permanent categories of UNSC membership to better represent the Global South. India also recently launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat for the 2028-29 term, competing with Tajikistan.
